With the e-commerce industry booming after the COVID-19 outbreak significantly increasing online sales, the need and demand for top e-commerce talent has been accelerated. The pandemic also shifted the mindset of candidates with the likes of flexible working becoming essential. New jobs need to stand out to attract the right talent’s interest, so how do you entice both active and passive candidates to join your company?

We’ve put together some effective do’s and don’ts on developing a successful eCommerce hiring process:

Demonstrate why the role is worthwhile:

In what ways will this position be a career changer? Candidates seek a challenge to which they can rise, allowing them to make significant contributions to the company. Show them how and why these obligations will have an impact, not just what the job responsibilities are to make each employee truly feel valuable and responsible for the growth and development of your eCommerce business, you should always connect how each job role can affect the wider mission of the company.

Provide actual opportunities for growth:

Following on from demonstrating why the role is worthwhile, you must then provide actual opportunities for career progression. ‘Candidates are always looking for real advancement and you need to be able to demonstrate how they can advance within your eCommerce company. You also need to show what you can do to support them during the process. Using expansion opportunities to attract and develop new eCommerce talent is a terrific approach to getting passive candidates on the scene. This means you don’t always need to hire the most experienced candidates

Plan your interview as follows:

Your interview process is the ideal place to start determining if a candidate is a proper fit for your organization and if they will be happy. Don’t delay the hiring process:

The longer you take to provide feedback and give out offers to candidates, the more likely they are to apply for different roles. As we mentioned before, keeping the hiring process short and sweet will allow you to avoid missing out on top talent. Create a clear interview process and stick to it.

Don’t underestimate the importance of remote/hybrid working:

It’s valuable to note that not all businesses embraced remote working following the pandemic. In those instances, a hybrid working approach was overlooked. However, the average candidate today expects to be able to work from home in some capacity. Within eCommerce especially, remote or hybrid working is becoming a key factor in recruitment strategies. When looking deeper at the statistics, 80% of respondents said when faced with two similar employment offers, they would turn down the one that didn’t offer flexible working so, it’s extremely important to consider this option. If you expect employees to be in the office at all times, your organisation will not be at the top of the list; create a culture of trust from the start!

Don’t limit your search for eCommerce talent:

If you overlook remote/hybrid working, then you’re also ignoring a larger pool of eCommerce talent. Companies that adopt remote working can in turn hire remotely, which allows them to broaden their search geographically. This applies to both active and passive applicants. Since the best fit isn’t always actively looking, reach out to others in your network and don’t let location stop you from hiring the best talent out there.
